Patrick Blog: Grassroots 7/16/09 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Patrick Norman
I dont know if this is really a blog or just a random thought but, Here I am at the grassroots festival in trumansburgh ny. Listening to some great musicianship in the dancehall tent. It always amazes me at how many fantastic musicians there are out there. Many of them accountants farmers, electricians, ect.. And it just got me thinking of how imbedded music is in our society. It is truely one of the great unifiers of our culture. I do not think I have known a day without music in it. I love having music in my life Patrick

6-26-09: PATRICK NORMAN BLOG ENTRY - MICHAEL JACKSON E-mail

Patrick Norman 1974When I was 5 I vividly remember the joy I had sitting crosslegged on the floor, headphones secured, looking up at my parents stereo. A blue and beige tweed icon of the 70's more a piece of furniture than a sound system but it was our first record player radio combo and I loved it. There I was belting out songs from the latest "45 my parents had purchased( by the way for those of you under 30 a "45 was a single). I Want You Back, and The Love You Save by the Jackson5 . These weren't the days of innuendo and rumors. These were the days of Big Wheels and kickball. Summer nights and sounds from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. I say this because today Michael Jackson died and we lost not just an American Icon but also (speaking personally) an author to some of the soundtracks to mine and I'm sure others life. Don't get me wrong I know his life was later on filled with controversy and accusations and I was not a MJ fanatic. I didn't really listen to much of his work after Bad. But his 40 year career in music touched millions and millions of people in a positive way. Whenever I think on the happy days of my youth his songs play right along with Soundtrack of my childhood and I wish I could thank him for that. So cheers to you Michael Jackson the King of Pop.. Rest in peace. ~Patrick Norman

Is anyone else amazed at what is happening currently in Iran? It seems that the protests over there election is happening at a grassroots level. The fact that their government is not cracking down hard seems to me to be a sign that maybe a real democracy is taking hold. Maybe we should have protested a little bit harder in nov 2000. Patrick

Rusted Root Lemonade StandUsually the simplest ideas turn out to be the best... and this was one that turned us all into six- year-olds for a day. Rusted Root Lemonade Stand

Back on May 25th (Memorial Day) we were invited to play at the Fallen Not Forgotten Benefit in Pittsburgh.  We really wanted to do something to help lift people's spirits.  Everyone's so down about the economy and the state of the world, we wanted to remind them there are cool things going on and show them what Musicians have to do to earn money these days!  Anyway, we decided to do a free Organic Lemonade stand.  All you had to do to get a glass, was to sign up for our mailing list.   Lemonade Stand 2

We had a blast hanging out with the fans! We were excited that we could keep the lemonade organic and treat everyone to a free glass. It was a simple way to connect but one that was really powerful and gratifying. We were looking for a way to let people know that "Stereo Rodeo", our new record, is out and we will be touring this year to promote the new music. This worked well and I'm looking forward to taking it on the road! See ya out there! You never know where we'll turn up. - Michael
